Odisha sets up India’s first silicon carbide plant with an investment of Rs 620 crore

Bhubaneswar, September 7 (KNN) The country’s first silicon carbide plant was inaugurated in Orissa on Friday, marking a significant step towards boosting India’s semiconductor potential.

The project, having an investment of Rs 620 crore, is being developed by RIR Power Electronics Limited at EMC Park, Infovalley, Bhubaneswar.

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, who presided over the ceremony, called the development “another significant step in our ongoing journey to make Odisha the leading semiconductor hub in India”.

The head of government emphasised the centre’s potential to create cutting-edge products and provide local talent with opportunities to work at the forefront of technology.

The establishment of this facility is expected to have far-reaching implications. The project is expected to invest Rs 620 crore over three years, potentially creating over 500 new jobs at various levels, from R&D to manufacturing operations.

According to official sources, this development puts India and Odisha at the forefront of the global power electronics market.

The plant is expected to attract skilled professionals, support local innovation and drive economic growth in the region. RIR products are already sold globally in North America, Europe and Asia, serving sectors such as rail, defense, power, transportation, aviation and sustainable energy.

The project is expected to contribute significantly to India’s mission of becoming an independent semiconductor manufacturing hub.

The opening of the silicon carbide production plant is a key step in Odisha’s entry into the power electronics industry.

The project is expected to improve the industrial landscape of Bhubaneswar by implementing best practices, promoting sustainable energy and supporting the development of advanced technologies.

RIR is reportedly in the process of establishing technical and research collaboration with IIT Bhubaneswar to further strengthen the local ecosystem.

Officials note that Odisha has received several other investment proposals in the semiconductor and related sectors for new plants in Bhubaneswar, further cementing the state’s position as a growing electronics and semiconductor manufacturing hub in India.

This trend indicates growing confidence in the state’s ability to support high-tech industries and contribute to India’s technological progress.

The silicon carbide plant is expected to play a key role in India’s semiconductor industry, potentially reducing the country’s dependence on imports and supporting indigenous technological capabilities.

As the project progresses, it will be closely watched by industry experts and policymakers as a sign of India’s ambitions in the global semiconductor market.
