Volvo expands cooperation with Nividia

Volvo has announced an intensified collaboration with American technology company Nvidia to fully exploit the potential of its future software-defined cars, which will be equipped with a centralized computing architecture.

Volvo says it plans to introduce cars based on the Nvidia Drive Thor later this decade. Cars built on this computing architecture are expected to be capable of 1,000 TOPS (or Tera Operations per Second) – four times more operations per second than the Nvidia Drive Orin system on a chipwhile offering seven times greater energy efficiency.

Volvo says the integration of this new computing architecture will enable the company to prepare the next generation of cars for the future and implement more advanced driver assistance and safety features, develop autonomous driving, and introduce generative AI-based capabilities and new in-car experiences.

To further explore the potential of AI, Volvo Cars, through its software subsidiary Zenseact, is also using NVIDIA DGX systems – an AI supercomputing platform optimised for heavy workloads – to help develop safe autonomous driving.
