The state government on Sunday said that 48 MW of solar systems will be installed on various government buildings in Gujarat during the current fiscal year at an investment of Rs 177 crore.

To fully harness the potential of solar energy in Gujarat, the state’s Climate Change Department is actively installing such systems on government buildings, he said.

“A total of 3,023 rooftop solar systems have been installed across various government departments in the state by March 2024, generating a total power of 56.8 MW,” the government said in a statement.

“To accelerate this initiative, 48 MW of solar power system will be installed on government buildings across the state this year. The state government has allocated Rs 177.4 crore to support the project,” it said.

During 2023-2024, Gujarat generated a total of 24,765.3 million units (MU) of renewable energy, including 9,637 MU from solar, 14,201 MU from wind, 885,325 MU from hydropower, 69 MU from small hydropower and 42 MU from biomass and bagasse.

“The vast solar potential of the state has been effectively harnessed through setting up of solar parks and installing solar power plants on rooftops. Projects like Charanka Solar Park have made Gujarat a leader in solar power generation in India,” the government said.

Offshore wind farms have also played a key role in increasing the state’s renewable energy potential, it said.
