In short

  • According to the journalist, two new Apple Intelligence features may not appear until December with the iOS 18.2 update.
  • These features are the Image Playground app and the Genmoji feature.
  • The first Apple Intelligence features are expected to arrive in iOS 18.1 in October.

Apple previously confirmed that the Apple Intelligence AI features would be available as a beta in the fall. However, it is believed that these features may not be available on iPhone 16 devices right away and could arrive with the iOS 18.1 update in October. Now, a trusted source claims that two AI features could arrive even later.

Bloomberg Journalist Mark Gurman noted in his Power On newsletter that Apple has delayed two imaging features in iOS 18.2. According to the journalist, the update is not expected to arrive until December.

The two iOS 18.2 features are reportedly the Image Playground app and the Genmoji feature. The former is an image-generating tool that lets you generate images based on concepts, although you can also use prompts if you want to be more specific. Meanwhile, the Genmoji feature lets you generate new emojis using your keyboard. You can even generate emojis based on the people in your photos.

Apple Intelligence: Gradual Feature Rollout?

The news comes some time after reports that the improved Siri won’t be available until spring 2025. The improved voice assistant will feature better natural language processing, the ability to remember context between requests, and support for “hundreds of new actions.” Either way, don’t expect all of Apple’s Intelligence features to be available when the iPhone 16 series launches.

The news also comes after Google upped the AI ante on the Pixel 9 series. In addition to the existing summarization and transcription features, the new flagship phones also offer the Pixel Studio app for generating images, the more intuitive Gemini Live assistant, call summaries, and the Pixel Screenshots app for organizing and recalling information from screenshots.
