Anwar slams Teresa Kok’s comments on halal certification. Here’s what you need to know

In a Facebook post, she said the move would be a burden on businesses, including those run by Muslims, would restrict consumers’ freedom of choice and would go against the spirit of cultural diversity.

She also mentioned that the implementation of the regulations could make Malaysia a “laughing stock abroad”.

The former primary industries minister said applying for halal certificates should be voluntary, allowing businesses to make decisions based on market demand.

“There is currently no law in Malaysia requiring restaurants to apply for halal certification. This mandatory implementation is contrary to existing regulations and may require changes to various laws,” she said.

In response to Anwar’s criticism, Kok said yesterday she could not express her views through internal channels because Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs), Mohd Na’im Mokhtar, had made the proposal in an open forum without first consulting his representatives.

According to the New Straits Times, Kok is currently under police investigation for matters relating to the 3Rs (race, religion, royalty).

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said the Seputeh MP would be investigated under Sections 298 and 505(b) of the Penal Code for outraging religious feelings and causing public fear.

She will also be investigated under section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for misuse of network facilities.
