Apple adds sleep apnea detection to Apple Watch Series 10, 9 and Ultra 2

During its Glowtime event on Monday, Apple announced it will be adding a new Apple Watch feature that can alert users to sleep apnea, a health condition that causes you to stop breathing during sleep. Apple says it expects to receive FDA approval for the feature “very soon.”

The feature will be available on the new Apple Watch 10, as well as the Apple Watch 9 and Ultra 2 models.

To detect sleep apnea, supported models use an accelerometer to monitor a new parameter during sleep called “disturbed breathing” and notify users if they detect signs of moderate or severe sleep apnea.

You can check your nightly values in the Health app. You can also download a detailed report from the app and share it with your doctor.

“The detection algorithm was developed using advanced machine learning with a large dataset of clinical-grade sleep apnea tests,” said Dr. Sumbul Desai, Apple’s vice president of health, during the event. “It was then validated in a clinical trial that was the largest ever for sleep apnea technology. We’re excited about the incredible impact this feature could have on the millions of people living with undiagnosed sleep apnea.”

The feature will be available in over 150 countries and regions this month, including the US, Europe and Japan.
