Everything we know about the Apple Watch Series 10

The Apple Watch update is the first true redesign of the watch in years. The Apple Watch Series 10 is slimmer, but has a larger screen and smaller bezels. It also comes in a lighter aluminum version or titanium. Yes, there is no mention of detecting oxygen in the blood, but instead, The Cupertino, California-based tech giant is tempting fans of wearable devices with sleep apnea detection.

The flagship Apple Watch is different from Series 9 (which was basically the same for the three previous versions.) The Series 10 is the “thinnest Apple Watch” at 9.7mm thick10% thinner than last year’s Watch. With smaller bezels, it now has a larger watch face, although unlike the latest Google Pixel Watch 3, it only has a single watch face size.

The other big design change is the slanted display, which now features a so-called “wide-angle OLED” screen. Apple says it should be 40% brighter than the Series 9 when viewed at an angle. The watch is now available in three colors with an aluminum case: anodized black, rose gold, and classic silver.

According to Apple, you still have the option of polished titanium, although the aluminum cases weigh 10% less than premium titanium. The watch should charge faster, with engineers in Cupertino promising you can go from 0 to 80% in 30 minutes.

The design change required Apple to shrink internal components like the speakers, though the tech giant promised you won’t hear any differences in sound. The good news is that it’s still using the same band connection points as previous models, so anyone upgrading from the last-generation Apple Watch won’t need to spend money on their favorite band.

The new health detection software includes a brand new sleep apnea detection feature. This feature will use an accelerometer to monitor users’ breathing and sleep habits over time and notify them of potential sleep apnea through the Apple Health app.

This function is similar to what we saw with the recent Samsung Galaxy Watch 7 and the new Galaxy Watch Ultra earlier this year. Samsung watches ask users to manually log two or more sleep cycles to detect any signs of sleep apnea, but Apple’s devices will work more in the background for longer periods. Like Samsung’s devices, the Apple Watch will only notify you of any sleep issues and recommend seeing a real doctor.

However, Apple says it is still waiting for FDA approval for this feature. there are a few new non-medical software features on board. The smartwatch will use watchOS 11, which will include a few additional improvements, such as automatic sleep tracking. Series 10 also allows you to use the translation function using a watch with speech recognition.

As for the Apple Watch Ultra, there are no changes at all. There’s no Ultra 3 in sight. While it does get access to new sensor features, the biggest change is a new dark case option. Apple says this new color version should be just as durable and scratch-resistant as the other silver titanium cases.

At the very least, the sleep apnea features are being rolled back to the Ultra 2 and Series 9. The Ultra also has access to the new Tides app for all you ocean geeks and surfers who really want to know what the wave conditions are like at their local beach.

The Series 10 will be priced at $400 for the GPS version and $500 for the cellular version. The Apple Watch Series 10 will launch on September 20, with pre-orders available today.
