Miami Police Release Video of Tyreek Hill Arrested by Police

Top line

Miami Dolphins guard Tyreek Hill was briefly detained and handcuffed by police near Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday morning after a traffic accident. He was released after the incident and played in Sunday’s game, prompting the Miami-Dade Police Department to open an investigation, transfer the officer to administrative duties and release body camera footage of the incident.

Key facts

According to NFL Network, Hill was stopped for a minor road rage incident while entering the stadium, while ESPN reported he was pulled over for speeding and reckless driving.

ESPN reports, citing anonymous sources, that Hill was handcuffed following a verbal altercation with police.

Hill was ticketed for a traffic violation, his agent Drew Rosenhaus told ESPN, calling the police handling of the case “heartbreaking” and “incomprehensible.”

“Several teammates saw the incident and stopped to provide support,” the Dolphins said on Twitter, adding that all players involved are available to play in Sunday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Dolphins linebacker Calais Campbell was one of Hill’s teammates involved in the incident and was also taken into custody ahead of Sunday’s game, according to the Miami Herald.

Rosenhaus reportedly said on NFL Network’s Sunday show that he thought Hill would “clear his mind, calm down and get through it,” and Hill did in fact play in Sunday’s game and scored an 80-yard touchdown in the third quarter.

The Miami-Dade Police Department said Sunday that an internal investigation has begun and one of the officers involved in the incident “has been placed on administrative duties while the investigation continues.”

In the released body camera clip — nearly two hours long, according to the Miami Herald — Hill is seen being pulled from the car and dragged to the ground after an argument with officers, apparently over a rolled-up window.

Miami-Dade Police Department Director Stephanie Daniels said in a statement Monday that the video was released to “reinforce the Department’s commitment to keeping the public informed” and that the investigation is continuing.

Chief Critic

Rosenhaus reportedly told NFL Network that “this shouldn’t happen to a player coming into his home stadium” and “there’s no reason Tyreek should be treated this way.” He added that they would take a closer look at what happened after the game.

Key general information

Hill has been with the Dolphins since 2022 and played for the Kansas City Chiefs for six seasons before that. Hill has had legal troubles in the past: In 2014, Hill was kicked off the Oklahoma State University football team after pleading guilty to domestic assault and battery for assaulting his pregnant fiancée, the Miami Herald reported. His conviction was expunged in 2018, but Hill was re-examined in 2019 after his 3-year-old son broke his arm and child welfare investigators removed the child from Hill. The Kansas City Star reported that prosecutors believed a crime had been committed against the child but were unable to prove who did it, so no charges were filed against Hill.

Tangent

Some fans compared Hill’s arrest before Sunday’s match to the arrest of PGA player Scottie Scheffler, who was stopped earlier this year while entering the PGA Championship grounds. Charges against Scheffler — including a felony count of assaulting a police officer and three misdemeanors — were ultimately dropped.
