Gov. Evers orders flags to fly at half-staff in honor of 9/11 and State Day of Service and Remembrance » Urban Milwaukee

MADISON—Governor. Tony Evers signed Executive Order 240 directing the flags of the United States and the State of Wisconsin to be flown at half-staff on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, out of respect for the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives in the attacks on September 11, 2001. Additionally, Executive Order 240 proclaims Wednesday, September 11, 2024, as State Day of Service and Remembrance to encourage all Wisconsinites to perform acts of service and give back to their local neighbors and communities to honor the lives lost 23 years ago. Governor Evers and members of the Evers Administration will participate in service events on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, as part of State Day of Service and Remembrance.

“On this day each year, we remember the thousands of lives lost, honor the first responders, neighbors and volunteers, among many others, who responded with courage and great sacrifice, and pay tribute to the countless others whose lives were forever changed by this tragedy,” said Governor Evers. “On September 11, we reflect on the spirit of service, our collective resilience, and our determination to find strength through unity, community and common purpose. I encourage Wisconsinites to join us in honoring this special day through service, whether it’s finding ways to give back to our local communities or even simple acts of kindness toward others.”

A list of potential volunteer opportunities, including virtual options, can be found on the Volunteer Wisconsin website here. Wisconsin residents can also participate in other ways, including getting involved in their neighborhoods and communities, performing acts of kindness, or taking time to reflect on the meaning of the day.

Executive Order 240 will be in effect from sunrise to sunset on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, and is available here.
