Nine Stories Productions Names Josh McLaughlin President

Jake Gyllenhaal’s Nine Stories Productions has appointed Josh McLaughlin as its new president.

McLaughlin joins from his own production company, Wink Pictures, where he spent more than five years building a diverse slate of films, television shows and podcasts. In his new role, he will look to drive growth for Nine Stories after several major successes for the company. They include a pair of projects with Gyllenhaal: a remake of Amazon MGM Studios House by the roadwhich broke viewership records in its first two weekends, gathering over 50 million viewers worldwide on the Prime Video platform, becoming the most watched studio debut in history, as well as an Apple TV+ program Presumed innocentthe platform’s most watched series, which was recently renewed for a second season, with Gyllenhaal once again serving as executive producer on Nine Stories.

Working with Gyllenhaal to expand the Nine Stories offering, McLaughlin will work to help the company become a creative hub for filmmakers and a home for prized intellectual property.

Before founding Wink Pictures, McLaughlin spent 10 years at Focus Features, eventually rising to president of production, where he was involved in producing numerous films, including Spike Lee’s BlackClanmanKasia Lemmons HarrietJoe Wright The Darkest Hourand Paul Thomas Anderson Ghost Thread. Other notable filmmakers he worked with there included David Leitch on the film starring Charlize Theron Atomic Blonde and Joel Edgerton on The boy erasedAs executive producer he was behind Let him goa neo-Western thriller starring Kevin Costner and Diane Lane.

Prior to Focus Features, McLaughlin held executive positions at Chernin Entertainment and The Mark Gordon Company.

Oscar and Tony Award-nominated actor Gyllenhaal founded a fully capitalized production company, Nine Stories, in 2015. Previous films produced by the company include: Guiltystarring Gyllenhaal, which was the number 1 movie on Netflix for over three weeks; Paul Dano’s directorial debut Wild animalsstarring Carey Mulligan; David Gordon Green Strongerin which Gyllenhaal plays Boston Marathon bombing survivor Jeff Bauman; Antonio Campos The devil all the time for Netflix; Reinaldo Marcus Green Joe Bell; Taylor’s Dad The latest news from Yuba County; and Ladies and Gentlemena documentary about war photographer Chris Hondros, which won the Audience Award at the Tribeca Festival.

He recently signed a three-year production deal with Amazon MGM Studios for the film, which includes theatrical and streaming releases. Nine Stories’ stage credits include We only live for a short period of time by playwright David Cale, and also Sea Wall/Life and Jeremy O. Harris Slave gamewhich were nominated for a Tony Award in the “Best Play” category the same year.
