First power from Buffalo Plains Wind project delivered to Alberta grid

Renewable energy investment firm Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) has announced the delivery of the first power from its Buffalo Plains wind farm to the electricity grid in Alberta, Canada.

Buffalo Plains, which is set to become Canada’s largest onshore wind farm at 495 MW, began installing turbines in April 2024. More than a third of the turbines are now in place, with full installation and grid connection expected in the fourth quarter of 2024.

Once completed, the project will feature 83 turbines, providing renewable energy to approximately 240,000 homes in Alberta. The project is being developed in partnership with Siemens Gamesa and Borea Construction.

Buffalo Plains is part of CIP’s broader renewable energy portfolio in North America, which includes more than 29 GW of assets across wind, solar, battery storage, pumped-storage and transmission.

In addition to Buffalo Plains, CIP also operates the largest solar and wind projects in Canada (in terms of capacity).
