New Solar and Battery Project for Qld

Iberdrola Australia has begun construction of the Broadsound solar farm and battery, marking the company’s entry into the Queensland market.

The major renewable energy development project, located at Clarke Creek, approximately two hours north-west of Rockhampton, will include a 376 megawatt (MW) solar farm and a 180 MW/2-hour battery storage project.

When completed in mid-2026, the Broadsound project will generate enough electricity to power 145,000 homes. The project is expected to create up to 350 jobs over the course of its approximately two-year construction schedule.

“After many years of providing energy to Queenslanders, we are excited to be able to generate power locally with the Broadsound Solar Farm and BESS project,” said Ian Quirke, CEO of Iberdrola Australia.

Ross Roffee AO, Executive Chairman of Iberdrola Australia, highlighted the company’s experience in the Australian market.

“With over 20 years of experience working in Australian communities, we look forward to this major step into the Queensland market and expanding our 17GW of energy assets operating across the country.”

Roffee expressed his gratitude to the local community, Indigenous people, the Queensland Government and Isaac Regional Council for their partnership in delivering the project, which aims to provide clean and affordable energy.

The Broadsound project is being built on the land of the Barada Kabalbara Yettimala people and Iberdrola Australia has established a Community Benefit Fund to meet the needs of the local community during construction and operation.

In addition to generating renewable energy, the project includes sustainability initiatives such as regenerating local streams and improving important wildlife migration corridors in the region.
