Los Angeles Lakers Announce Tribute to NBA Legend Jerry West

NBA legend Jerry West passed away on June 12, 2024. At the time of his death, he served as a consultant to the LA Clippers’ board of directors, and after retiring from his legendary playing career, West had an incredible career as an executive.

Via the LA Clippers on June 12, 2024: “Today, the world lost an icon and a national treasure, as beloved in the pockets of West Virginia as they were in the hills of Los Angeles and everywhere in between. The Clippers have lost a mentor, confidante and friend. We are both heartbroken and honored to have witnessed the final chapter of Jerry West’s legendary career.”

“He was a fierce competitor, a generous teammate and a whole lot of fun to the end,” the team continued. “His passion for the game was unmatched. His wisdom, generosity and sense of humor are forever woven into the fabric of the franchise. He gave his heart to everyone and everything he touched. Our deepest condolences go out to the West family and the entire basketball community, united under one Logo.”

While he spent the last years of his life working for the Clippers, West spent all 14 of his NBA seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers, where he also served as an executive and head coach after retiring. In West’s honor, the Lakers announced Tuesday that they will wear a commemorative No. 44 armband on their jerseys next season.

“This season, the team will honor Jerry West by wearing a commemorative jersey with the number 44,” the Lakers wrote on X.
