Sony’s new PS5 Pro console will launch on November 7 for $700. The main selling point of the new system is that it can offer big leaps in gaming performance for existing PS5 games thanks to a combination of three hardware and software innovations; the new AI-based upscaling via PSSR can be used in conjunction with a new, more powerful GPU to effectively double the game’s frame rate and even triple its ray tracing performance.

But to get the most out of PS5 Pro, developers will need to release game-specific patches. Sony has confirmed that these patches, known as PS5 Pro Enhanced patches, will be free. Anyone who bought a PS5 in 2020 is familiar with the process — developers and publishers would roll out a series of free patches that would bring PS4 games to the next-generation PS5, along with increased graphical fidelity and frame rates.

PlayStation 5 Pro offers two ways to improve gaming performance: Game Boostwhich is native and automatically applied to supported games, and Enhanced version of PS5 Prowhich are software-optimized patches released by game developers. Sony has announced CNET that 40-50 games will receive PS5 Pro Enhanced improvements after the system’s launch.

It was similar with how Sony handled increasing performance in games during the transition from PS4 to PS5; the PS5 also had two separate ways to increase performance in games.

Here’s what PS5 architect Mark Cerny had to say about the features in PlayStation Blog Post:

PS5 Pro Game Boost

  • Other improvements include PS5 Pro Game Boost, which can be applied to over 8,500 backward compatible PS4 games that are playable on PS5 Pro.

Enhanced version of PS5 Pro

  • It’s humbling to see game developers embrace the latest technology with PS5 Pro, and several games will receive free software updates so players can take advantage of PS5 Pro features. These games can be identified by the PS5 Pro Enhanced label in their title.
