5 songs we want to hear

Greetings from Asbury Park, E Street fans.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band will headline the Sea Hear Now concert on Sunday, September 15, at North Beach in Asbury Park.

“Hurt Somebody” singer/songwriter Noah Kahan will headline the Saturday, September 14 show. Gaslight Anthem, Trey Anastasio Band, Black Crowes, Norah Jones, 311, Revivalists, Kool & The Gang, Hives and more will play across three stages at North Beach and Bradley Park over two days.

The festival also features art, some by artists, and surfing. Tickets are sold out, but some are available for $220 for Saturday and $330 for Sunday on the secondary market. Visit the festival website at www.seahearnowfestival.com for more information.

Springsteen appeared unannounced at the inaugural Sea Hear Now in 2018 with Social Distortion, but Asbury Park appearances with the E Street Band have been rare. The last time was in 2010 at the Carousel House on the boardwalk to record the “Songs from the Promise” video and the “Live from the Carousel” EP.

This was Clarence Clemons’ last performance with the band before his death.

Springsteen and E Street Band’s Sea Hear Now performance promises to be a truly special evening. Several classic Springsteen songs were performed on the Asbury Park beach. Here are five that could lead to some truly magical moments at Little Eden.

“Ghost in the Night”

All aboard, including Crazy Janey and Hazy Davy. The warmer the better on the beach night for this lightly swinging jazz classic from “Greetings from Asbury Park, NJ.” The song depicts wanderlust on the Jersey Shore and dancing in the moonlight. This should set the scene perfectly on North Beach.

“The Seaside Bar Song”

Springsteen said the jump-rock treat was written after a trip to Osprey in Manasquan, but Asbury Park certainly has a few waterfront bars. The Stone Pony and Wonder Bar are on Ocean Avenue, and Break, Low Dive, Watermark and Tim McLoone’s Supper Club are on the city’s boardwalk.

“Thunder Road”

This classic song from Born to Run isn’t directly related to Asbury Park, but it would be amazing to hear 30,000 people singing it on the beach.

Born to run

The Hemi-powered drones roaring down Asbury Park Boulevard have been replaced by Ubers, and Palace Amusements is gone. But you, me, Springsteen, and the E Street Band are still here, and there’s nowhere left to hide.

“July 4th, Asbury Park (Sandy)”

Fireworks won’t be ringing out over Little Eden on September 15. It’s the music of Springsteen and the E Street Band that will light up the night. Fifty years after its release on The Wild, the Innocent and the E Street Shuffle, this ode to leaving Asbury Park’s “boardwalk life” will ring with a new spirit if performed. Will it be performed? Only Springsteen and Madam Marie know for sure.
