Ana de Armas has spoken candidly about her decision to leave Hollywood in search of a simpler life.

During a recent interview with E! News at the Toronto International Film Festival premiere of her latest film Eden, de Armas explained that she decided to leave Los Angeles for rural Vermont to “get away from the madness of the world.”

“We all want to have the chance to build our own safe space. I made that decision myself. I found a home where I really feel off the grid,” she explained. “I can gather myself and only take the people I want to be with there. I have my own little cocoon there.”

The “Knives Out” star previously gained a lot of attention when she began a relationship with Ben Affleck after they met on the set of their 2019 film, “Deep Water.” They split in January 2021.

It’s unclear whether this played a role in her decision to move, but she said she felt she needed to make a change in her life.

“You just feel like it’s time for a change,” she explained. “Take care of yourself. This is the time when you learn what’s good for you and what’s not. What works best for you? Pay attention to it and take action.”

De Armas’ breakthrough role came in the 2019 film “Knives Out” alongside Christopher Plummer, Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis and other big names.

After starring in several more films, including No Time to Die, which reunited her with Craig, de Armas starred as Marilyn Monroe in Netflix’s Blonde, which focused on the rise and fall of the legendary star.

The role earned the actress her first Oscar nomination. While the film was met with critical acclaim, audiences were less positive in their reviews. De Armas admitted in a March 2023 interview with The Hollywood Reporter that it was “hard for me to hear those reactions,” but in moments like these, she thinks back to what “drawn (her) to the project.”

“That’s not going to change. You have a director and other actors that you can always talk to,” she told the outlet. “As hard as it is to hear that people don’t like your film, that’s just how it is. It wasn’t a film that was made to please people or make them like it. It’s a difficult film to watch.”

Although she left Los Angeles, she told E! News in March 2023 that she will always have a connection to the city due to her work on Blonde.

“Everywhere we went, in all the places, everywhere you go, she’s there,” she said. “Everybody has a story about her. So we all definitely felt her presence in terms of that spiritual energy, and I think that definitely helped with everybody’s commitment and willingness to do right by her and love the process of making this movie even more.”
