Anker Prime 250W Charger Review: Is It the Smartest Charger Ever?

There are so many chargers out there with different combinations of power and ports, it’s almost impossible to know which one to choose. But when it comes to connecting my most important devices, I want to choose a brand I trust, and I’ve been using and trusting Anker products for years.

The ever-expanding Anker company has just unveiled a new series of Prime chargers, and the one at the top of my list is the Anker Prime 250W, which will likely give me all the power I need for my desktop computer, but now has a new screen that shows contextual information about charging speeds.

As its name suggests, the Anker Prime 250W has a combined output of 250W divided among its ports. There are six ports in total, with four USB-C ports on the front and two USB-A ports on the side for older devices. All of these ports have different ratings depending on how many of them are being used at once, with the maximum power for a single port being 140W, for two ports 140W + 100W, and for six ports 70W + 70W + 45W + 30W + 15W + 15W.

The output seems to match what’s stated on the box – although I did have trouble using it to its full capacity. I connected two MacBook Pros (a 13-inch MacBook Pro and a 16-inch MacBook Pro), as well as two Pixel phones (a Pixel 8 Pro and a Pixel 6a) and a set of Pixel Buds, and I still didn’t hit the maximum 250W, so it’s really more than enough for everything on a regular desk or charging multiple devices at once.

The Anker 250W charger looks great, and while I initially thought the screen might be more of a gimmick, it actually turned out to be quite useful. Not only did it help me make sure my devices were charging as quickly as possible, but with rising energy costs, it became somewhat indispensable for monitoring how much power my devices were using when they weren’t being used, so I could unplug anything that wasn’t essential.
