PS4 System Update 12.00 Now Available, Patch Notes Released

Sony released PS4 System Software Update 12.00 alongside a major PS5 firmware update today, and this time the patch notes are a little different than what we’re used to seeing. Sony has been busy patching security holes in recent months, which are formally called “stability” or “security” updates for the system. But today’s firmware update brings with it a small improvement.

What does PS4 system update 12.00 (September 12, 2024) bring?

“We’ve improved messaging and usability on some screens,” the official description reads. But rest assured, the update has also brought additional security fixes that will keep hackers on their toes.

The PS4 jailbreak has been stuck on version 11.00 for some time now, and as the hacker community approaches the milestone, Sony is throwing obstacles in their way. It could take years for hackers to catch up at this rate.

Interestingly, Sony has apparently given up on patching the PS3’s security flaws. The company attempted to patch the vulnerabilities until February 2024, but has remained silent since then. A brief foray into the console’s online community suggests hackers are conveniently modifying the PS3.

As a reminder, online play is not available on unlocked consoles, so if you want to take advantage of this option on your PS4, you will have to opt out of multiplayer.
