Apple prepares to make iPadOS apps available in alternative EU app stores

European iPad owners will be able to download iPadOS apps from third-party app stores starting September 16.

In the European Union, iPhone users can buy and download apps from third-party stores like the Epic Games Store. While iPad owners haven’t been able to do the same yet, Apple is preparing to make it possible.

A post published on the Apple Developer website on Friday revealed the changes that will be coming to iPadOS 18 apps distributed in the EU. On Friday, Apple updated its App Review Guidelines to add iPadOS to Notarization.

Notarization refers to the process that apps must go through before they can be made available through alternative app markets. This involves a series of checks that include making sure they are safe and secure, as well as encrypted and signed, ready for distribution.

Starting September 16, iPad users in the EU will be able to download iPadOS apps from the App Store and through alternative stores.

For developers who have entered into an Alternative App Terms agreement in the EU, the first annual installs of iPadOS apps will begin to be billed. At the same time, the lower App Store commission rate will apply to these apps.

On the same day, alternative browser engines will be available for iPadOS apps. Additionally, historical App Install Reports in App Store Connect, which can be used with Apple’s payment calculator, will also include iPadOS.

Apple adds that developers should stay up to date with third-party app store agreements as the latest versions include support for iPadOS.
