FedEx to open cargo hub in India to strengthen domestic and international trade links

FedEx is strategically positioning itself to benefit from the booming Indian market, seeing significant opportunities in the country’s growing e-commerce and import sectors.

In an interview with CNBC-TV18, Kami Viswanathan, president of the Middle East, Indian Subcontinent and Africa (MEISA) region at FedEx, outlined the company’s ambitious plans to strengthen its position in India. A key part of the strategy is to open a cargo terminal in India, which will enable FedEx to serve the domestic market more efficiently and support international trade.

“We also have plans to develop a cargo hub in India,” Viswanathan said. “India is a hub that will help us better serve the domestic market in India with a better value proposition, and also connect with Southeast Asia and Asia to the Middle East and beyond.”

This new cargo terminal is expected to enhance FedEx’s ability to streamline imports and increase operational efficiency across its Indian and international networks. The company is working closely with both the Indian government and airport operators to deliver on these plans, with announcements and investments expected soon.

FedEx is also bullish on India’s long-term potential. Viswanathan said the company saw strong double-digit growth in India last year, and expectations are that growth will continue to outpace the market in the coming years.

“This growth is across the board,” she said, citing increased demand from global customers who are starting manufacturing and export businesses, as well as small and medium enterprises (SMEs) that are thriving in India’s e-commerce sector.

In addition to expanding its cargo capacity, FedEx is focused on improving its infrastructure in India. The company has been investing heavily in expanding its gateways, particularly in key cities like Delhi and Bangalore, to better manage growing trade volumes. Earlier this year, FedEx also launched a state-of-the-art hub at Dubai World Central (DWC) airport, a key link for Indian exports and imports.
