Netflix Just Got The Best Sci-Fi Action Movie Of The Decade — And It’s Got A 91% On Rotten Tomatoes

I still remember watching Edge of Tomorrow in theaters a little over a decade ago. Given its generic title (which was later changed to the equally bad Live. Die. Repeat for its home media release), my expectations were pretty low. However, I was blown away by this sci-fi film that combines a gripping story with blockbuster action.

To this day, I consider it the best sci-fi action movie of the last decade, and one of the best in the genre. That’s no small compliment, as I love all things sci-fi. This fantastic film was added to Netflix this month (and has already shot to #2 in Netflix’s top ten), and now is the time to watch it if you missed it the first time or feel like watching it again (trust me, it holds up).

To be clear, Edge of Tomorrow is one of those movies that gets better the less you know before you watch it, but if you’re on a time crunch and need a little more convincing before you add this movie to your watchlist, here are all the details you need to know about this incredible new movie on Netflix.

Like many science fiction action films, Edge of Tomorrow begins in a vague, futuristic vision of Earth where an alien invasion has caused chaos and confusion.

In this film, our planet has been taken over by nightmarish creatures called Mimics, but humanity has not lost hope thanks to a great victory at the Battle of Verdun and the rapid planning of the next offensive on Europe.

After this, Major William Cage (Tom Cruise) reluctantly enters the front lines after being stripped of his rank for cowardice. Within moments of entering the battlefield, Cage is killed by Mimic, but suddenly awakens on the morning of the day he died.

Cage is stuck in a time loop, forced to relive the same day and his death over and over again. Desperate to escape this terrible fate, he tracks down Sergeant Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt), who may be the one person who can help him break free and defeat the Mimics once and for all.

I’ve always enjoyed any kind of fiction that involves a time loop, so it’s no surprise that the basic premise of “Edge of Tomorrow” immediately drew me in. However, a good concept means nothing if it’s not well executed, and in this case, “Edge of Tomorrow” absolutely hits the nail on the head with everything it tries to do. Director Doug Liman has crafted a well-oiled sci-fi film and the best entry in his filmography to date.

I particularly like the first half, which sees Cage trying to come to terms with the strange situation he finds himself in, and it’s fun to watch the loop unfold slightly differently each time. But once things get going, “Edge of Tomorrow” really starts to raise the stakes, and some of the later action sequences are suspenseful.

Cruise and Blunt also prove to be the perfect leading pair for such a film. Cruise’s act is well-known — the actor is probably the last true movie star left — but Blunt manages to keep up with him, and in Rita Vrataski, he has a role that really lets her shine. The duo also has solid chemistry, with plenty of sarcastic banter and just the right amount of romantic tension.

“Edge of Tomorrow” also manages to come back to itself with a finale that feels both earned and logically coherent. That’s not always the case with time-loop fiction. While I enjoy movies, shows, and video games that repeat days, many of them struggle to reach a satisfying conclusion, and I have to give “Edge of Tomorrow” a lot of credits for ending so strongly (and for a fantastic choice of song in the end credits).

I’m certainly not alone in thinking that “Edge of Tomorrow” is one of the best sci-fi action movies of the last few years. The film currently has an impressive 91% rating on Rotten tomatoesand the viewership rate is equally high at 90%.

In a 2022 review, Jake Cole from Slant Magazine said, “Doug Liman’s science fiction action thriller remains one of the most enjoyable American blockbusters of the last decade.” Kevin Maher of London Times hailed it as “the smartest hit of this summer, and maybe every summer.”

David Edelstein from Vulture called it “‘Groundhog Day’ recreated as a sci-fi war game,” which is an elevator pitch that should immediately get you excited to watch the movie.

If you’re looking for a little midweek thrill, you can’t pass up Edge of Tomorrow. Even over a decade after its release, I’m still struggling to find another film with the same perfect blend of action thrills and mind-blowing sci-fi storytelling. Add to that two incredibly well-cast leads, and you’ve got a package deal that’s damn hard to beat.

Its arrival on Netflix is the perfect opportunity for even more people to see it — it did moderately well at the box office in the summer of 2014, but wasn’t a huge hit — and it also gives people like me who already know how great it is a chance to gush over it. So add it to the top of your watchlist, it deserves to be high up there.
