Home Loan & Emi Rates Dip, But City Power Bills Double In 10 Yrs | Nagpur News

Home loan & EMI rates dip, but city power bills double in 10 yrs

Nagpur: A middle-class household with a couple of air-conditioners and other routine electrical gadgets like a washing machine, microwave, refrigerator, and television may end up using 500 units in peak summer. If the consumption remained static, power bills have doubled in the last 10 years for the family.
TOI compared the basic power tariff charged by the state govt distribution company — MSEDCL from 2014 to 2024.A quick calculation by taking the basic tariff on 500-unit consumption, draws up a bill of ₹3,130 in 2014. Ten years down the line, it comes to over ₹6,000 for the same number of units. The amount further goes up if other components like electricity duty, fuel adjustment charges, and certain fixed charges are added in both years. If it has doubled in a decade, the bills have gone up by approximately 50% in last five years. Power bills have raced past the other financial outgo of a typical middle-class household.
EMIs on a home loan have eased a bit in the last decade. Rentals or property prices in pockets in city have not matched the speed at which power bills have gone up.
