Popular mobile game “Flappy Bird” returns after 10 years

Look who’s back after ten years – the popular viral mobile game “Flappy Bird”. Yes, you read that right!!!

After being pulled from the App Store over a decade ago, Flappy Bird will return in an enhanced version on various platforms, including web browsers, in late October.

The app is expected to be released on native Android and iOS in 2025.

For those who don’t know, Flappy Bird was originally released on May 24, 2013 by its Vietnamese creator and developer, Dong Nguyen.

In this game, the player must control the bird Faby, which constantly moves to the right by flapping its wings.

The player’s task is to guide the bird through a series of green pipes with equal gaps placed at random heights, without touching them.

What’s more, the bird automatically descends and starts flapping its wings upwards only when the player touches the screen.

However, play will restart again if the bird collides with a pipe or the ground.

This simple but addictive mobile game, which was not initially successful, became one of the most popular mobile games of all time only after it was reviewed by Swedish YouTuber PewDiePie.

Despite the mobile game having over 100 million players and generating around $50,000 per day from in-game advertising, Nguyen discontinued the game on February 8, 2014, much to the disappointment of fans.

The game was pulled from the App Store and Google Play Store, which was shocking because Nguyen was unhappy with the addictive nature of the game and felt guilty about it.

He wrote: “I can call Flappy Bird my success. But it’s also ruining my simple life. So now I hate it.”

Ten years later, Flappy Bird is back, but this time the new mobile game isn’t from original creator Nguyen (via IGN). It is the work of The Flappy Bird Foundation, which describes itself as “a new team of passionate fans who want to share the game with the world.”

“It’s been a decade-long, complicated journey, but we’re thrilled to finally be able to share Flappy Bird with the world again,” said a spokesperson for the Flappy Bird Foundation.

The Flappy Bird Foundation announced that it has acquired the official Flappy Bird trademark from American company Gametech Holdings LLC, in addition to the rights to the original game and the character Piou Piou vs. Cactus, the mobile game that allegedly originally inspired the Flappy Bird character.

Michael Roberts, Chief Creative Officer for the return of Flappy Bird, said: “We’re incredibly excited to be bringing Flappy Bird back and delivering a new experience that will keep players engaged for years to come. We have big plans for our little Bird!”

Piou Piou vs. Cactus creator Kek added: “Today is a milestone not only in gaming, but for me personally. It’s so cool to see how influential Piou Piou has been to creators and hundreds of millions of players over the years.

It’s great to work with such a dedicated team of fans and creators who are truly passionate about changing the narrative in the industry and coming together to bring the original Flappy Bird back to life.”

The new, more advanced version of Flappy Bird is expected to introduce new game modes, characters, progression opportunities and huge multiplayer challenges.
