IAF pilot creates AI system to streamline aircraft inspections, says it will reduce accidents caused by human error

In order to prevent accidents that occur due to human error, the squadron commander SS Bhatkare With Indian Air Force has developed an AI-based aircraft inspection system. His innovation, which focuses on inspecting aircraft panels, gauges, and covers, promises to improve safety for both pilots and ground crews.

Bhatkare, Israeli Air Force pilot advanced SU-30 MKIwas inspired by India’s drive for self-sufficiency and innovation within the government’s policy Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. In recent years, there has been a surge in support for homegrown technologies and startups in the defence sector, and Bhatkare’s innovation is a direct response to that call.

Ministry of Defence Shares video

The Ministry of Defence, in a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), also lauded the work of Squadron Leader Bhatkare, highlighting his commitment to safety and innovation. “Driven by the vision of #AatmanirbharBharat, Sqn Ldr SS Bhatkare defied odds and developed a state-of-the-art AI-based aircraft inspection system,” the minister said.

The Ministry of Defence also released a video in which Bhatkare can be seen talking about his innovation. He said that the growing support for homegrown technologies and startups in the defence sector inspired him to create it.

“In the last 3-5 years, in India itself, there has been a lot of promotion of startups and innovations and creating things. That motivated me. I thought I would also bring something. I have created an innovation to detect the panels of aircraft, indicators and cowlings. First of all, the aircraft has to be inspected to try and find out if there is any damage. Sometimes the pilot gets tired or due to human error, he may miss certain things. A camera system will be developed which will be able to scan the entire service of the aircraft. This will be able to reduce the number of accidents that occur due to human error,” he said.

Increasing security with artificial intelligence

Bhatkare’s AI-powered system will scan the entire surface of the aircraft, helping detect any damage or irregularities that might be missed during manual inspections.

In other words, the aircraft inspection system uses advanced AI algorithms to scan aircraft surfaces, identifying any wear or damage that could compromise safety. Unlike human inspections, which may miss critical details due to fatigue or oversight, Artificial Intelligence System works precisely, ensuring that no element is missed.

This AI tool represents a critical step forward in ensuring the safety of pilots, ground crew and the planes themselves. As air accidents continue to be a problem in many parts of the world, Bhatkare’s system has the potential to reduce the risks associated with human error, making air travel safer for everyone.
