Energy consultant seeks Swiss cooperation in renewable energy and advanced technologies

Advisor on Energy, Power and Mineral Resources Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan has asked the Swiss government to cooperate in the field of renewable energy and advanced technologies.

He also invited Swiss entrepreneurs to participate in the development of Bangladesh and invest in economic activities.

Fouzul, who is also an adviser on road transport, bridges and railways, made the decision when Swiss Ambassador to Bangladesh Reto Renggli met him today (September 15).

The Swiss envoy led the delegation during the meeting in the advisory room at the Ministry of Energy, Energy and Mineral Resources in the Secretariat.

The advisor discussed the steps he has taken in the short time since taking office to ensure transparency and accountability in the energy sector. He welcomed Swiss companies that have participated in various development activities in Bangladesh.

Fouzul Kabir said he recently visited the Matabari power plant project. The project also includes deep-sea ports, economic zones, railways and road projects. However, real benefits cannot be gained from just setting up the power plant until other projects are implemented.

He noted that during the term of the previous government, a huge number of unplanned development projects were undertaken and implemented in the energy and power sector.

“In most cases, projects were implemented at costs that were much higher than reasonable, which did not result in financial benefits.”

He stated that from now on he would attach importance to implementing large projects with the help of small, low-cost projects.

He also noted that the emphasis will be on renewable energy generation and the use of environmentally friendly energy.

Swiss envoy Reto Renggli welcomed the advisor, who took up positions in three important ministries, and said that it was a very difficult task. The ambassador appreciated the steps taken by the current government in a short time.

He expressed hope that the measures taken, including the suspension of controversial power sector law and the scrapping of Section 34A of the BERC Act, introduction of open tender in government procurement, removal of secretaries from the positions of CEOs of companies they control, will play a significant role in ensuring transparency and accountability.

The ambassador assured that the offer of investment and technological assistance to Bangladesh will be seriously considered.
