Adam Sandler Says ‘We’ve Only Just Begun’ As Production Begins on Best-Loved Comedy Sequel

Adam Sandler has announced the start of production on a sequel to one of his most popular films.

In 2020, the Hollywood star signed a $275m (£209m) deal with Netflix, which has led to a number of acclaimed achievements including Hubbub AND You’re not invited to my Bat Mitzvahwhich gave the actor a bad rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Only now will the streaming service produce a sequel to the old film starring Sandler, with the actor reprising his role as Happy Gilmore to mark the 30th anniversary of the film’s release.

On Monday (September 9), Netflix confirmed that Kyle Newachek, who directed the Sandler film, Murder Mysterywill oversee the film written by Sandler and Tim Herlihy. Dennis Dugan directed the original.

Happy Gilmore 2 is officially in production,” Netflix’s official social media accounts shared, showing off the first look at Sandler’s costume from the film. Sandler himself shared the post on Instagram, writing, “It’s not over yet. That’s how I see it… we’ve only just begun.”

Released in 1996, a sports comedy Happy Gilmore is about a hockey player with anger management issues who realizes he can channel his anger into big wins in professional golf. He finds himself up against an arrogant adversary named Shooter McGavin, played by Christopher McDonald.

Happy Gilmore grossed $41m (£31.3m) worldwide against a production budget of $12m (£9.1m) and remains one of Sandler’s most popular films.

Rumors of a sequel first surfaced in March when McDonald said Sandler had written and shown him an outline for the sequel.

“I saw Adam about two weeks ago and he said to me, ‘McDonald, you’re going to like this,'” McDonald said in a radio interview on Audacy’s 92.3 The Fan.

“I said, ‘What?’ He said, ‘What do you think?’ and showed me the first draft.” Happy Gilmore 2 … I thought, “Well, that would be amazing.” So that’s in the works. The fans are demanding it, damn it!”

Sandler has hinted several times in the past that he would be interested in reprising his role as Happy Gilmore.
