A completely new line of Mac computers could hit the market in just a few weeks

Apple’s iPhone 16 event was completely devoid of new Macs, and there were a few good reasons for that. One is that Apple is expecting to launch so many new computers this year that there simply wouldn’t be enough time for all of them at the iPhone event. And now a new report claims that those new Macs are just around the corner.

In his weekly Power On newsletter, Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman outlined what he expects from Apple in a potential follow-up event in October. That includes a refresh of a wide range of popular Mac desktop and mobile computers. Gurman’s predictions are often spot on, so when he suggests those Macs are almost ready, it’s worth paying attention.

Gurman’s list includes a refresh of the entire MacBook Pro line. That includes a new entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro with an M4 chip, as well as high-end 14-inch and 16-inch models with “two pro-grade M4 chip options,” which will almost certainly be the M4 Pro and M4 Max.

Two desktop Macs are also apparently in line for an update: the iMac and Mac mini. Both will feature M4 chips, Gurman says, while the Mac mini will continue its trend of offering an upgraded chip option in the form of the M4 Pro.

That means not every Mac will get the M4 update. Gurman, for example, thinks the MacBook Air is in line for a refresh in the first quarter of 2025. The Mac Studio will arrive “in the middle of next year,” Gurman says, and the Mac Pro will arrive before the end of 2025.

Even without those devices, Mac fans should have plenty to be excited about at Apple’s October event. Gurman’s predictions seem to support the idea that Apple is moving its Macs toward an annual release schedule, similar to what it currently does with its iPhones. The MacBook Pro, iMac, and Mac mini were all updated in 2023, while the MacBook Air received a refresh in 2024, meaning Gurman’s predicted release schedule will see all of them get an annual overhaul. The Mac Studio and Mac Pro were updated in 2023, so a 2025 update won’t fit into the annual timeframe, but that’s perhaps not surprising considering those are high-end machines that Apple typically updates at a slower pace.

The Mac isn’t the only device you can expect to see at the October show — Gurman believes there will also be “lower-end iPads” present. Given that the iPad Air and iPad Pro were both updated in 2024, it’s likely Gurman is referring to the entry-level iPad and iPad mini, which were last revised in 2022 and 2021, respectively.

We don’t have a specific date for the October event yet, but based on past years, a Monday or Tuesday in mid- to late October seems likely. We can’t be more specific at this point — Apple has chosen different weeks for its event in the past — but we’ll likely have a better idea as October approaches. Until then, we’ll keep our ear to the ground for more information.
