Bobb Angel Leaves WADK Morning Show

WADK 1540 and 101.1 FM (News/Talk/Jazz) Legendary Newport, Rhode Island morning radio host BOBB ANGEL will step down from his 58-year stint as host of WADK’S MORNING REPORT effective September 20, according to a press release sent out this morning on behalf of the station.

Island Broadcasting of RI, a Rhode Island-based limited liability company, plans to acquire two Rhode Island radio stations, 1540 WADK/101.1 W266DI Newport and Mixx 99.3 WMNP, from 3G Broadcasting, a Florida corporation.

“Angel, during an unprecedented tenure at WADK, through numerous ownership changes, held every position at VOICE OF NEWPORT, including General Manager. Bobb – with three Bs – has chosen to focus on commentating and executive producing WADK’s high school sports broadcasts,” the press release states.

On September 23, longtime afternoon show host Bruce Newbury will move to the morning show.

“WADK’s programming will now consist of MORNINGS WITH BRUCE with station meteorologist STEVE CASCIONE until 10:00 a.m.; VOICES OF NEWPORT COUNTY, local interviews and business talk from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.; and THE CEO SHOW with Robert Reiss of PARK CITY PRODUCTIONS from 11:00 a.m. to noon,” the press release reads.

“THE MIDDAY ON WADK, local arts and music interviews hosted by General Manager and sister of Rhythmic CHR/Throwbacks WMNP (MIXX 99.3) Program Director MATT (DOUBLE G) GIRARD, after 12:00-1:00 p.m. The afternoon will feature BUSINESS TALK WITH JIM CAMPBELL from Park City, the syndicated FRANKIE BOYER SHOW and local sports BIG TICKET WITH TEDDY HORAN. Evenings will remain local live sports and reruns of midday shows. Local jazz and swing with STEVE CONTI will continue on weekends, as will the syndicated DINING OUT WITH BRUCE NEWBURY, TALKIN’ BIRDS WITH RAY BROWN, THE MONEY PIT and UNDER THE HOOD. Newbury will also continue its weekend broadcasts on WVMT-AM/Burlington-Plattsburgh Vt/NY,” the station reported.

WADK has released the following additional information about Bobb Angel:

A 1962 graduate of Rogers High School with three “B” grades, Bobb has lived on Aquidneck Island his entire life and has been a vital part of the community. He graduated from the RI School of Broadcasting in 1967 and was hired by WADK in Newport in June of that year. Bobb has held every position at WADK, including various management positions. Along the way, he has mentored many young broadcasters whose first broadcasting experience came at WADK. Bobb has maintained close ties to the community. As host of the annual Newport Christmas Concert, he has raised generous amounts of money for the MLK Center’s holiday food drive, as well as numerous other Aquidneck Island causes and charities. His annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade broadcasts are a must-see for thousands of listeners, many of whom have left the island but still follow “The Voice of Newport County” via live streams and podcasts.

Bobb was inducted into the RI Radio Hall of Fame in 2010, one of 6 Halls of Fame to which he belongs. He is a 7-time Rhode Island Sportscaster of the Year. Bobb has hosted WADK’s Morning Report every weekday for over 40 years. As the Voice of Sports in Newport County since the 1970s, Bobb has provided and will continue to provide extensive broadcast coverage as well as commentary for local high school sports events from football to basketball, baseball, softball and hockey, as well as Salve Regina University games.

In every town in Newport County and throughout the state of Rhode Island, there are countless men and women who can recall a moment of glory when Bobb Angel called their play, pass, rush, game-winning run or game-saving catch. He chronicled the accomplishments of local student-athletes who have gone on to achieve success at the collegiate and professional levels. Additionally, Bobb has been on the microphone for many of Newport’s most significant and even historic events over the past half-century, including the America’s Cup, the Tall Ships, Newport’s Sister Cities ceremonies, the iconic Newport Jazz Festival, which Bobb hosted live at WADK, and the city’s beloved parades. Bobb Angel is a part of the history, fabric, lives and times of thousands of Newport residents.
