How to Claim Money from Your Cash App Settlement This Fall

Cash App is in trouble. The payment app suffered two unauthorized data breaches, resulting in a class action lawsuit. Now, affected customers (which means potentially You) may be entitled to $2,500 in monetary damages if the class action settlement is approved.

The class action lawsuit alleges that Cash App and its parent company Block were negligent when a former Cash App Investing employee accessed unauthorized account information in 2022, and when another user accessed certain Cash App accounts in 2023 by using duplicate phone numbers associated with the accounts.

If you have used Cash App – one of the most popular payment services with over 50 million users – in the last six years and have been the victim of an unauthorised transfer of funds, or if someone has accessed your personal information or Cash App account without your consent, you may be entitled to make a claim.

Who is eligible to claim part of the Cash App settlement?

According to the settlement website, you can file a claim if you meet any of the following criteria between August 23, 2018 and August 20, 2024:

  • You are a current or former Cash App or Cash App Investing customer and someone has accessed your personal information, your Cash App or Cash App Investing account without your consent.
  • You have had unauthorized or fraudulent withdrawals or transfers of funds to or from your account.
  • There was a shortcoming in resolving an error on your Cash App account or any associated financial account.

How much money can I receive in a Cash App settlement?

You can seek compensation of up to $2,500 per person for out-of-pocket losses and $25 per hour for up to 3 hours of lost time if you qualify for the proposed $15 million settlement. Out-of-pocket losses include costs associated with credit monitoring.

You can also file a claim for documented transaction losses. To file a claim for an out-of-pocket loss or transaction loss, you must provide third-party documentation.

How do I submit a settlement request within the Cash App?

If you are eligible for a cashout via Cash App, you must submit a claim form by 10:59:59 PM Pacific Time November 18, 2024.

This means submitting your application online or mailing it in with a postmark date no later than that date.

If you wish to make a complaint regarding multiple Cash App accounts, please list all complaint information on a single complaint form.

You have until November 1, 2024 to exclude yourself from the settlement or object to the settlement.

Note:The older version of the form, which could be mailed in, listed October 15, 2024 as the filing deadline. The new form lists November 18, 2024. In an email, the settlement administrator told CNET, “To be on the safe side, you should follow the October 15, 2024 deadline. It’s possible that the deadlines have recently changed.”

When is the Cash App payout date?

A final hearing on approval of the Cash App settlement is scheduled for December 16, 2024 at 9:30 a.m. Pacific Time. If approved, payments would be made after that date.
