Goyal proposes to create a startup town

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Monday suggested setting up a town dedicated to entrepreneurs and start-ups that would aim to replicate the success of America’s Silicon Valley.

He also invited startups to participate in official delegation visits to various countries, as this gives them an opportunity to present themselves well.

“We should strive to go beyond that. We should strive to have our own Silicon Valley. I know Bengaluru is the Silicon Valley of India. But I think it’s time for us to start thinking about also merging with NICDC and creating a whole new town dedicated to entrepreneurs, startups, innovators and disruptors…” he said.

The National Industrial Corridor Development Corporation (NICDC) is implementing the National Industrial Corridor Development Programme, which is an ambitious infrastructure programme aimed at developing new industrial towns as smart cities. They are developing 20 such towns in different parts of the country, including Bihar, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh. The Minister was addressing the startupers at the launch of the Bharat Startup Knowledge Access Registry (BHASKAR) portal in the national capital.

“Can we create a society or an entire area of 200 (or) 100 (or) 500 acres… see if we can create some kind of ecosystem… whether it is someone who comes from a very distant place with some idea, who doesn’t know where and whom to contact, can end up there (in the township), like people used to come to Mumbai in the past,” Goyal said.

The Minister encouraged young entrepreneurs to look abroad and become global players as they hold enormous opportunities.
