New guide links underwater radiated noise and GHG

The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) has published the second edition of Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions: A Guide to International Regulatory Compliance.

The guide covers the full spectrum of maritime emissions issues, from current regulations to future projections. It pays particular attention to the needs of the tanker sector, for which CII regulations are particularly complex.

Highlights of the second edition include:

● A new chapter on the European Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), addressing the serious confusion surrounding its application to all ships trading within and outside the European Union.

● Examines the relationship between greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and measures to reduce underwater noise, highlighting how efforts to reduce one often naturally undermine the other.

● Comprehensive new supplement detailing some 100 ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and underwater radiated noise.

● All content is thoroughly reviewed and updated to ensure accuracy and relevance in a rapidly changing regulatory environment.

Chris Waddington, Technical Director at ICS and co-author of the guide, said: “This updated edition comes at a critical time for the shipping industry. The new chapter on the EU ETS addresses one of the most pressing and difficult topics in maritime regulation today, providing clarity on its current status and implications for global shipping.

“We are particularly excited about the new section linking GHG and underwater noise reduction measures. This innovative approach demonstrates how emission reduction efforts can deliver multiple benefits, including addressing the growing problem of underwater noise pollution.”

ICS also announced the publication of a book that will focus on underwater noise.
