‘The Bear’ breaks Emmy record for most comedy wins in a year

“The Bear” is an Emmy beast. The FX series just broke its own record for the most Primetime Emmys won by a comedy series in a single year, taking home 11 trophies at the 76th Emmys. That’s an improvement from last year’s 10 Emmys, which was the previous record for the laffer.

The biggest wins Sunday night included awards for best comedy actor (Jeremy Allen White, as Carmy), supporting actor (Ebon Moss-Bachrach, as Richard “Richie” Jerimovich), supporting actress (Liza Colón-Zayas, as Tina) and directing (Christopher Storer for “Fishes” and Ramy Youssef for “Honeydew”).

Ahead of Sunday’s Primetime Emmys, “The Bear” Season 2 has already won seven Creative Arts Emmys over the past weekend. The wins included Jamie Lee Curtis (as Donna Berzatto) and Jon Bernthal (as Michael Berzatto), who won for Comedy Guest Actress and Comedy Guest Actor, respectively, for the episode “Fishes”; and Outstanding Casting in a Comedy Series (winners included Jeanue Bacharach, Maggie Bacharach, Jenifer Rudnicke, Mickie Paskal and AJ Links).

Additional Creative Arts wins included Picture Editing for a Single-Camera Comedy (Joanna Naugle, for “Fishes”); Sound Mixing for a Comedy or Drama Series (Half-Hour) and Animation for an episode of “Forks” (Steve “Major” Giammaria, Scott D. Smith, Patrick Christensen and Ryan Collison); Cinematography for a Single-Camera Series (Half-Hour), also for “Forks” (Andrew Wehde, Director of Photography); and Sound Editing for a Comedy or Drama Series (Half-Hour) and Animation (also for “Forks”), won by Giammaria, Andrea Bella, Evan Benjamin, Jonathan Fuhrer, Annie Taylor, Jason Lingle, Jeff Lingle, Leslie Bloome and Shaun Brennan.

It was a record-breaking year for “The Bear.” In July, the second season of the hit FX series, set to air in June 2023, led the comedy series rankings with 23 nominations, including Outstanding Comedy Series. It broke the record of 22 Emmy nominations, which NBC’s “30 Rock” has held since 2009.

At the 75th Emmy Awards, Season 1 of The Bear won awards for Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy (Ayo Edibri), Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), Outstanding Actor in a Comedy (Jeremy Allen White), and Outstanding Writing and Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series (both for Christopher Storer).

The comedy series from Christopher Storer follows Carmy (White), an award-winning chef who returns to his hometown of Chicago to manage his deceased brother’s sandwich shop, which he and Sydney (Edebiri) transform into an upscale restaurant.
