Bluesky now has over 10 million users

Social network Bluesky said Monday it now has more than 10 million users, thanks in large part to the network’s rapid growth in the past few weeks following the closure of Elon Musk’s X service in Brazil.

“If you’re reading this, you’re one of the first 10 million Bluesky users!” the company wrote in the post. Bluesky also has a fun Easter egg on its homepage: Clicking the celebration emoji lets you see your on-platform join number and share it with your friends.

Last month, Brazil’s highest court banned X in the country and fined users who accessed the service using a VPN. After that, other social networks like Meta’s Threads and Bluesky gained popularity. These apps currently rank in the top 10 on the App Store and Play Store for social media in Brazil.

Bluesky quickly gained 3 million users within days of X’s ban in Brazil, and its overall user base surpassed 9 million earlier this month. The company said more than 85% of new users came from Brazil.

Last week, Bluesky reported record activity on the platform, and due to mass registrations, the platform experienced several server glitches.

After nearly a year of being invite-only, Bluesky opened its platform to all users in February. Meanwhile, Bluesky’s rival, Threads, which is owned by Meta, has grown to over 200 million users.

Bluesky last week finally allowed users to post videos on the app. It also introduced self-moderation tools, such as controlling who can quote a post, hiding replies, and the ability to mute speech for a set amount of time.
