Von der Leyen names new top team for European Commission

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Tuesday appointed Teresa Ribera of Spain as the next commissioner for antitrust, while Kaja Kallas of Estonia will be responsible for foreign policy. Andrius Kubilius of Lithuania will become the EU’s first defence commissioner, a new role aimed at boosting European manufacturing capacity in the face of Russian aggression on Europe’s eastern flank. The commission is the most powerful institution in the 27-member European Union. It has the power to propose new EU laws, block mergers between companies and sign free trade agreements. FRANCE 24’s Dave Keating reports.
