WhatsApp is testing a new feature to tag contacts in status updates.

WhatsApp has been part of the Meta suite of apps for a while now, and over the years it has gained a number of features that bring it more in line with its counterparts Instagram and Facebook. Now, it looks like the messaging app is getting ready to introduce another feature that was previously exclusive to those social media platforms.

WhatsApp status updates will become even more like Instagram stories

With the latest beta update for WhatsApp for Android, version 2.24.20.3, now available on the Google Play Store, it has been revealed that WhatsApp is rolling out a new feature that lets users mention contacts in their status updates. There were previously reports that this feature was in development, but it looks like WhatsApp is now testing it publicly. Some beta testers can already try out the new ability to mention contacts in their status updates.

This feature allows users to add specific contacts to their status updates by tagging them, which sends them a notification. When you mention someone, they will receive a notification, making it very easy to connect with the right people.

To tag a contact, users will see a button in the caption bar when sharing photos and videos for a status update. This handy option is available just before clicking post.

It’s worth mentioning that these tags are private. This means that other recipients of the status update won’t see who was mentioned. Only the tagged contact will receive a notification and a message in their chat.

Additionally, you should know that said contacts can reshare the status update with their audience using the new reshare button on the status screen. If they find the update noteworthy or valuable, they can easily share it with their contacts, helping to spread the word. However, when they share a status, the original creator remains hidden, so people who view the reshared status won’t be able to contact them directly.

I think this feature would be a great addition to WhatsApp, as it adds a fun social element to the app and makes users feel more connected. In other WhatsApp news, the app is testing a time-saving shortcut that lets users quickly add chats to lists, as well as simplifying the process of transferring ownership for community owners.
