Rochdale News | Business News | Event aims to boost footfall on Rochdale’s high streets amid shop closures

Date of publication: September 17, 2024

Rochdale’s retail sector is set to receive a much-needed boost thanks to a new initiative aimed at helping local businesses adapt and thrive in the face of increasing challenges.

An event designed specifically for retailers will be held in Rochdale on 10 October, offering expert advice, insights and practical strategies to help businesses navigate the current economic climate.

The initiative, launched by GM Business Growth Hub, comes amid the worrying news that 38 stores are closing every day on the UK high street. However, amidst the grim statistics, there are signs of hope, particularly for some sectors of the retail industry.

GM Business Growth Hub has launched a specialist high street support package for Rochdale, offered free of charge to businesses, which it hopes will help to revitalise the local retail landscape.

Yvonne Sampson, Head of Enterprise at GM Business Growth Hub, highlighted the importance of supporting small business owners who are the backbone of local communities. She said: “High streets are the beating heart of communities, but people often forget about the small business owners who keep them alive.

“The report shows that they need to be given more attention and support. That’s why we’ve built that support with feedback from retailers, so we know it’s needed and will make a real difference in our local communities.”

The newly formed support group will be led by Omar Mulla, retail specialist at the GM Business Growth Hub.

The programme offers retailers in Rochdale the chance to access valuable advice on how to overcome the challenges they face. The initiative aims to help businesses of all sizes remain competitive by delivering strategies tailored to their unique needs.

Omar Mulla, who has many years of experience in retail and e-commerce, expressed his enthusiasm for the programme.

He said: “I’ve worked in retail and e-commerce since I was a teenager so I’m really excited to be able to provide this support to businesses in Rochdale. We’ve spent time with business owners from across the region to make sure it’s exactly what they need.

Despite the challenges facing the UK retail sector, Mulla sees reason for optimism. “There is hope! Some areas, such as retail and small shops, have shown clear signs of growth. With this support we can help put all of our high streets in the best position possible.”

The October 10 event will feature speakers with extensive experience in retail, digital marketing and customer service. Attendees will gain insight into new strategies to grow their businesses, with a focus on addressing key challenges and capitalizing on growth opportunities.
