Neighbors respond to Shively Motel closure order

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – The Department of Codes and Regulations has ordered the Louisville Manor Motel in Shively to close.

“The Department of Codes and Regulations, in cooperation with the Shively Police Department, has taken the decisive action to order the closure of the Louisville Manor Motel. This decision is based on growing concerns and documented incidents of theft, assault, and drug-related activity that posed a serious threat to the safety and well-being of our community.

Sergeant Jordan Brown with the Shively Police Department said they see these problems on a regular basis.

“We’ve made 202 trips to this location since January 1st, which is obviously not only a drain on our resources, but it’s detrimental to our community because with that much activity at this location, citizens are essentially unable to live in peace,” Brown said.

Brown said they repeatedly tried to mediate with the motel and implement security measures.

“Requiring guests to show identification upon check-in, recording license plate and vehicle numbers, and increasing parking lot lighting to provide additional security have unfortunately been met with indifference,” Brown said.

Willie Hines has lived near the motel for nearly a decade. He says his car was broken into twice and that someone held a gun to him as he was driving into the housing development.

“Two guys were crossing the street, so I’m slowing down, trying to let them cross, and the guy stops and pulls out his gun, like, ‘Why are you stopping?’” Hines said. “They’re coming from the hotel.”

Hines said he likes the neighbors and the apartment but is considering other options.

“I like this place. It’s really comfortable,” Hines said. “But if anything’s going to change, it’s me. I’d rather stay here, but if nothing happens, maybe it’s time to move on.”

Hines said he was glad the motel was abandoned. His neighbor, Terry Pullum, shared the same sentiment.

“God is good. Yes, we need a change, and if they can’t keep it safe and keep the rest of society safe, they don’t need to be there,” Pullum said.

The motel has until Friday to appeal the order, after which hearings will be held to decide whether it will close.

The motel declined WAVE News’ request for comment.
