Apple suspends iPadOS 18 update for iPad Pro M4 after reports of crash

Apple has temporarily halted the rollout of iPadOS 18 for the iPad Pro M4 models, some of the most expensive iPads the company sells, after some users complained that the update was bricking their devices. Apple confirmed the issue in a statement to Engadget, saying, “We’ve temporarily removed the iPadOS 18 update for the iPad Pro M4 models as we work to resolve an issue that affects a small number of devices.”

The issue first came to light via Reddit, where a growing number of iPad Pro M4 users described how their iPads became unusable after trying to install the latest version of iPadOS. “At one point during the update, my iPad turned off and would not turn on again,” wrote a user named tcorey23 on Reddit. “I just took it to an Apple Store, where they confirmed it was completely broken, but said they had to send it to their engineers before they could replace it for me, even though I have Apple Care.”

Another Reddit user named Lisegot wrote that the Apple Store he took his broken iPad Pro M4 to didn’t have a replacement in stock, meaning he’d have to wait five to seven days for a working iPad. “No one offered any specific apology, and they even suggested they had no way of knowing if the update caused this,” they wrote.

It’s rare for a software bug to damage an iPad. ArsTechnicawho first reported the story, noted that iPads can typically be put into recovery mode if a software update fails.

If you own an iPad Pro M4, Apple will no longer offer iPadOS 18 until it fixes the issue. It’s unclear when the issue will be resolved.
