During success, do not forget the North

The Lebanese terrorist organization Hezbollah was rocked on Tuesday when several of its members were killed and thousands injured when pagers issued to its activists exploded near them.

While this is a positive development in Israel’s broader fight against terrorism, it does not bode well for the citizens of northern Israel.

Social media has been flooded with videos of terrorists in public places, minding their own business, when suddenly their pagers explode.

While Israel had not claimed responsibility for the attack at the time of publication, a senior Lebanese security source told Al-Hadath that Israel had infiltrated the communications system of individual devices and detonated them. Al-Hadath also claimed that the IDF had remotely detonated the devices using advanced technology.

A Hezbollah official, speaking to Reuters on condition of anonymity, said the detonation of the pagers was the “biggest security breach” the group has experienced in nearly a year of war with Israel.

How did they do it?

Beeper works by receiving radio waves on frequencies assigned to each device. When a message is received, the device emits a beep, encouraging the user to call back. As technology has advanced, devices have become smaller, and short messages (numbers or a few words) could appear on the small screen of the beeper.

The method used to trigger the explosion remains a mystery and will only be discovered once the remains of the devices are analyzed.

Any force working against the evil that is Hezbollah must, above all, be congratulated. If it is Israel, then that is something that should bring us great pride, because it reflects so well the security systems that we have touted as superior to any others in the world.

As with any other power in the world, Israel must be viewed as an ally in our cause to eradicate terrorism and extremist hatred against Jews and the Jewish state.

It is certainly time to mark the new war that we see all over the world, especially in the Middle East, not just in this particular war, but in the last few years. We have seen attacks being carried out that embody the term “out of the box.”

For example, in May 2021, during Operation Guardian of the Walls, the IDF tweeted: “Israeli Defense Forces air and ground forces are currently attacking the Gaza Strip.”

It wasn’t accurate. Three hours earlier, soldiers were massing along the Gaza border. That’s a far cry from the attack in Gaza. Nevertheless, the tweet was published, and international media unleashed a wave of unprecedented stories.

While no ground invasion took place, 160 aircraft were in the air for a massive bombing raid on Gaza, and because of their deployment along the border and reports in foreign media of a ground invasion, Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad sent their first line of defense into their tunnels to begin taking up positions. As soon as they emerged from the tunnels, they were exposed to Israeli aircraft.

While the IDF has never confirmed that this was a tactic, it undoubtedly gave the Air Force an advantage in the attack.

In the case of exploding pagers, although different in method, it is similar to the attack in 2021 because it is a new face of war. The world has moved on from the days of just guns and trenches; today we have cyberattacks, drones, and now exploding electronic devices.

However, there is one thing we cannot forget – the inhabitants of the northern part of Israel bore the brunt of the war with Hezbollah and suffered many blows.

While this new development gives Israel an advantage – or at least is a bold statement on its behalf – there is no denying that Hezbollah will retaliate and the northern part of Israel will suffer the consequences.

Whoever came up with yesterday’s cunning attack, congratulations – but always bear in mind that far-reaching repercussions are inevitable.
