Amazon appoints new India chief

By Tracy Qu

Amazon.com has appointed Samir Kumar as its new head of its India region, as the e-commerce giant expands its operations in the country.

Kumar, who has worked for the company for 25 years, will take over Amazon’s India business and will also oversee consumer businesses in the Middle East, South Africa and Turkey, the U.S. company said in a statement on Wednesday.

Manish Tiwary, current country director of Amazon India, has decided to explore growth opportunities outside the company, Amazon said.

Amazon said Kumar will take over operational responsibilities in India from October 1.

The appointment comes at a time when the tech giant is increasing its investments in India. In May last year, cloud computing company Amazon said it plans to spend $12.8 billion to expand its data centre infrastructure in India by 2030.

“India remains an important priority for Amazon,” Amit Agarwal, Amazon’s senior vice president of emerging markets, said in a statement.
