Pixel Studio just got a welcome new sharing feature

Google Pixel 9 Pro Pixel Studio Options

In short

  • The latest update to Pixel Studio lets you share images from other apps using Google’s AI-powered app.
  • This means you don’t need to download photos first to use them in Pixel Studio.

Google’s Pixel Studio app for the Pixel 9 series lets you create entirely new images or edit existing ones with AI, but it looks like the app has received a significant addition that could make life a little easier.

The new version of the Pixel Studio app (version 1.1.001.672728916.05) now lets you share an image from any app using Pixel Studio, so you can edit it. When you tap the share button, you’ll see Pixel Studio as one of the options in the share menu. This joins the existing ability to select photos from Pixel Studio’s gallery picker. This new feature is convenient because it means you don’t have to first download the image you want and then select it in the gallery picker before editing it.

We managed to load the latest version of the app and get the feature working on our Pixel 9 series device. Check it out in the short video below.

There are a few limitations, though. The most notable limitation is that the app or service you’re sharing from must explicitly support sharing image files, not URLs. That rules out Instagram and web browsers that share a URL instead of an image with other apps. You can, however, share images from Slack or WhatsApp. That said, you can use the Pixel’s “select” feature from the recents menu to grab and share an image from unsupported apps.

It’s also worth noting that Pixel Studio doesn’t support photos of people, so don’t expect those snaps to show up when sharing them from another app. But that’s no surprise, as Google previously noted this limitation at launch.

The new feature still feels a bit rough at this stage, as we found that it sometimes took a few tries for Pixel Studio to successfully open photos. So we hope Google improves this sharing option soon.
