This iOS 18 Messages bug can cause the app to crash

This iOS 18 Messages app bug can cause the app to crash. Here’s what you need to know about it as an iPhone or iPad user.

The recently released iOS 18 software update introduces a number of new features, but it also apparently brings with it a new bug.

Fortunately, this bug only appears when people are using an Apple Watch feature that few people will encounter.

According to a report from 9to5Mac, those who fall victim to the issue will be unable to open the Messages app on their iPhone, iPad, or Mac until they delete the offending chat, leaving them vulnerable to potential data loss. The good news? The bug is only triggered when someone replies to a shared Apple Watch face in a new thread.

For now, the bug appears when someone replies to a shared watch face in a Messages thread in iOS 18. The threaded reply feature lets you have an inline conversation about a specific message that may have been sent earlier in the chat.

The issue does not currently appear in the iOS 18.1 beta, although those using that beta may be affected if someone using iOS 18 responds to a shared watch face as mentioned above.

The fact that the steps required to reproduce this bug are unlikely to be something most people do often should help reduce the risk, but it’s clearly a bug that Apple will need to address sooner rather than later. The iOS 18.1 software update is due out in October, so we can expect an iOS 18.0.1 update before then to address this issue.
