Trial begins on 115 charges against Man City

According to the BBC, the investigation is being conducted by a three-person independent commission and covers allegations dating back nine years from 2009 to 2018.

As SportBIBLE notes, the club is accused of, among other things, providing misleading financial data, falsely reporting payments to players and managers, breaching profit and sustainability regulations, flouting UEFA Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules and refusing to fully cooperate with Premier League investigations.

How did Manchester City react to the accusations?

Although City vehemently denies all allegations, the potential penalties the club could face are huge.

What are the possible sanctions?

Sanctions being considered include hefty fines, point deductions and the most severe punishment — expulsion from the Premier League.

But the repercussions could extend beyond the league itself.

Strict sanctions Manchester City could face

According to The Telegraph, if the panel finds Manchester City guilty, the club could also be banned from other major domestic competitions such as the FA Cup and the League Cup.

Additionally, their participation in the UEFA Champions League and FIFA Club World Cup could be called into question, which could put their global standing at risk.

In the case of City’s Premier League rivals, a points deduction alone may not be enough if the club is found guilty of the most serious charges.

What will Manchester City’s exclusion mean?

While the independent commission has the power to expel Man City from the league, it does not have the power to relegate them to a lower league.

If City are stripped of their titles or forced to restart in another competition, the balance of power in English football will shift and questions will be raised about the governance and financial transparency of the sport.
