Google Access Key Sync Makes It Easier to Move Away from Passwords

Google is improving the password experience in Chrome, making it easier to use passwordless login credentials across devices. The search giant is introducing a Google Password Manager PIN that lets users securely save and sync passwords for use across Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android devices. These updates are also available in beta on ChromeOS, with iOS support coming “soon.”

Passwords had to be saved in Google Password Manager on Android before this update, requiring users to scan a QR code on their Android device to access them on other platforms. The new PIN replaces the need to scan a QR code while ensuring that saved passwords remain protected by end-to-end encryption, so even Google can’t access them. Users will need to unlock their Android screen or use the Password Manager PIN to use passwords on a new device.

Users can set a default six-digit PIN or create a longer, alphanumeric PIN in the “PIN Options” settings.
