Eric Garcia from Barcelona Red card vs AS Monaco – Champions League

Eric García only appeared on the pitch for 10 minutes against Monaco before he was shown a red card and sent off.

Barcelona’s 2024-25 Champions League campaign got off to a terrible start at the Stade Louis II, with Marc-André ter Stegen delivering a weak, sloppy pass from inside his own penalty area in the 10th minute that was quickly intercepted by Takumi Minamino.

The midfielder went close to goal before García clumsily tackled the Monaco player, bringing him down just outside the penalty area. The tackle was a clear denial of a goal and the 23-year-old was shown a red card.

The midfielder was the only change to Hansi Flick’s starting XI following Dani Olmo’s injury, and rather than give Ferran Torres the chance to play as a striker, the German manager opted to deploy García alongside Marc Casadó in a double pivot.

Flick’s young Barcelona squad must now battle with ten players for 80 minutes plus injury time in their first European game of the season. To make matters worse for the Catalans, Monaco scored the opener just six minutes later.

Lamine Yamal scored for Barcelona to make it 1-1, but Barcelona still have a long way to go if they want to leave France with at least a point.
