Abang Johari: Shifting Nusantara’s capital opens up new opportunities for Sarawak-Indonesia cooperation

KUCHING, Sept 20 — A state premier said he expects bilateral cooperation between Indonesia and Sarawak in various sectors to expand following the relocation of the Indonesian capital to Nusantara, East Kalimantan.

Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg said the strong ties between Malaysia and Indonesia have long symbolised brotherhood, mutual understanding and cooperation.

“As the next generation, it is our duty to preserve this relationship, built on mutual respect, cooperation and shared cultural values. Together, we strive to continue to promote peace, prosperity and continued development in the region.

“Relations between Malaysia, especially Sarawak, and Indonesia are becoming increasingly stronger, especially after the transfer of the Indonesian capital to Nusantara, our direct neighbour.

“We hope that the bilateral cooperation between Indonesia and Sarawak will continue to flourish in various potential sectors including the economy, socio-cultural exchanges, and citizen services and protection, especially in supporting our children in the Community Learning Centres (CLCs) in Sarawak plantations.

“We hope that the potential for cooperation between Sarawak and Indonesia, as immediate neighbours, will remain strong, lasting and beneficial to both nations,” he said in a speech delivered at a diplomatic reception to mark the 79th anniversary of the Independence Day of the Republic of Indonesia yesterday evening.

He was represented at the event by Minister of Women, Childhood and Community Development Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah.

Abang Johari also congratulated Indonesians for achieving the milestone celebrated under the slogan “Nusantara Baru, Indonesia Maju”.

He added that the theme reflects key changes taking place in Indonesia, including the relocation of the capital to Nusantara and changes in the country’s leadership.

He added that it is also an expression of hope for a more advanced and sustainable future for Indonesia, in line with the Emas Indonesia Vision 2045.

“The celebration of the 79th anniversary has profound significance not only for the people of Indonesia, but also for the entire region, which continues to observe Indonesia’s progress.

“The bonds of friendship between Malaysia and Indonesia, which we hope will remain strong and unwavering, are a testament to this shared journey,” he added.

Among those present were Indonesian Consul General in Kuching Raden Sigit Witjaksono and his wife Lucy Octavia Witjaksono; as well as Sarawak Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin and his deputies Datuk Dr Jerip Susil and Datuk Henry Harry Jinep. — Borneo Post
