Kamareddy district offices will now run on solar energy

Kamareddy: After successfully installing a solar power plant on the roof of the Chief Planning Officer (CPO) office located in the Integrated District Office Complex (IDOC), the district administration is now considering powering the entire Integrated District Office Complex with solar energy.

According to reports, the district administration has approached the Telangana Renewable Energy Development Corporation (TGREDCO), which has set up a pilot solar power plant at a CPO in the district, to install solar panels at IDOC. Sources say the estimated cost of the project will be around Rs 95 lakh for a 10 KW solar power plant.

District officials said that since the state government has decided to install rooftop solar power plants on all government buildings, funds will not be a problem. The 1-megawatt CPO solar power plant reportedly generates around 35 units of power per day, while its daily consumption is around 20 units. The remaining units are diverted to the grid and used as per the requirement. TGGENCO buys electricity at a rate of Rs 3 per unit from the CPO solar plant.

Recently, Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka asked REDCO officials to install solar panels in all government offices in the state, which is on war footing. The state government has already started installing solar panels in 1,521 school buildings under the Mana Ooru-Mana Badi scheme. Solar panels have been installed in over 600 government schools and the rest are expected to be completed in the next few months, sources said.

According to energy officials, the state government wanted to promote solar rooftop systems in the domestic sector and government institutions under the PM Surya Ghar scheme launched by the Union government. Under this scheme, it is proposed to solarise government buildings in the state to meet the energy demand through solar energy in an environment-friendly manner.

The neighbouring Andhra Pradesh government has announced the installation of rooftop solar systems on all government buildings by the end of 2025. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Ltd (NVVN) and New & Renewable Energy Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh Ltd (NREDCAP) to install solar panels on government buildings. The AP government has proposed to implement 300 MW of rooftop solar systems on various government buildings in the first phase of the project.
