Alison Young

Deputy Director of Local Public Services, techUK

Alison Young is Deputy Director of Local Public Services.

Alison has a background in international trade and investment, with experience in the public, private and third sectors, advising on international trade, new markets, inward investment and working closely with UK cities and regions on investment in innovation, partnerships and technology. Prior to joining techUK she ran her own consultancy and was Head of Global Investment at Connected Places Catapult. This role focused on inward investment in the built environment and mobility, working on NetZero mobility projects across the UK and internationally. She worked closely with the Innovation Districts Group to support and build a knowledge network and helped establish the Freeport Innovation Network to support innovation in the context of freeports, with a particular focus on investment.

She lived and worked in the Middle East for six years at the Department of Business and Trade, first in Oman, where she led a range of sectors from education to infrastructure, and then in the United Arab Emirates, where she built the technology and smart cities sector, with a focus on artificial intelligence and fintech.

She is passionate about UK economic growth, creating jobs and opportunities, the green agenda and decarbonising transport. She has an MA in Russian Studies from the University of Edinburgh and is currently studying Arabic.
