Singapore Grand Prix: McLaren to modify rear wing after rivals question legality

Red Bull has not made any public comment on the wing issue, but sources close to the matter say team boss Christian Horner has been lobbying hard behind the scenes for the FIA to take action.

Ferrari team boss Frederic Vasseur said: “We all agree that the front wing can be a grey area. The rear wing is different because (it is defined) in the article (in the regulations) there is maximum deflection and it is black or white, not grey.”

Vasseur said the wing was “more than at its limit” and that the situation was “frustrating” following the close competition at the last two races in Monza and Baku, where the wing was used.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc won the Italian Grand Prix after McLaren secured a front-row lockout, with Piastri finishing second in Monza and team-mate Lando Norris third.

In Azerbaijan, Leclerc was overtaken for the lead by Piastri at the end of the service straight, with the Australian securing his second career victory.

The decision concerns only the rear wing that McLaren will use on high-speed, low-drag circuits, so will have no impact on the team at this weekend’s race in Singapore, or the subsequent races in the USA, Mexico and Brazil.

There will be no penalty for McLaren in this case.

The next race where the wing is likely to be used is the Las Vegas Grand Prix in November.
