Village Super Market CEO and interim chairman of the board of directors Robert Sumas will depart from his roles on Dec. 13, according to a Thursday press release.

The grocery company’s board of directors plans to name John J. Sumas as the new CEO and Nicholas Sumas as president and board chairman. Robert Sumas will stay with Village Super Market as a senior advisor to the executive team and also serve on the board of directors.

Robert Sumas has been with Village Super Markets since 1969, holding numerous leadership positions, including executive vice president, chief operating officer, secretary and a director of the company, according to the announcement. He served as CEO as well as vice chairman of the company’s board since 2017 and, prior to that, was president from 2009 to 2018.

John J. Sumas has been with Village Super Market since 1987, serving in various positions such as chief operating officer, general counsel and vice president.

Nicholas Sumas, who joined the company in 1994, has held leadership positions that include chief marketing officer and vice president. He is also an executive officer of Wakefern and a member of Wakefern’s board of directors.

Both John J. and Nicholas Sumas have served as directors of the company since 2009 and have been co-presidents since 2018.

Along with the executive leadership position changes, Village Super Market announced that its board will reduce the number of members from 10 to nine, effective immediately. The company chose not to fill a vacant seat caused by the death of board member William Sumas in July.

Village Super Market operates 34 supermarkets under the ShopRite and Fairway banners across New Jersey, Maryland, New York and Pennsylvania as well as three Gourmet Garage specialty grocer locations in New York City.
